Academic freedom is one of the most significant elements of any democratic country and acts as a protector of truth and the driver of social progress. This freedom guarantees that scholars and researchers are able to engage in studies and discussion of different problems and present their dissident opinion without the threat of political censorship, disciplinary measures of any kind or persecution in general. Today, when polarization and manipulation of information become the defining features of contemporary society, the preservation of independence of the academic system becomes a requirement of the democratic state.
First of all, the right to conduct research and discuss it publicly is important for the proper functioning of democracy. Any healthy democracy should be based on objective facts, scientifically verified data and thorough historical analysis instead of political rhetoric. The freedom to study controversial issues, such as global warming, public healthcare or inequality in income is what provides citizens and politicians with the needed information in order to make right decisions. Otherwise, academic research becomes propaganda of the government or corporations, which manipulates people using the information as a means of power.
Secondly, universities act as a control mechanism, just like any independent media or judicial system. Scholars criticize prevailing political doctrines, economic systems and injustices in society quite often. The protection of right to express dissenting opinion allows preventing the monopolization of thinking. The independence of academic institutions guarantees the opportunity to openly criticize the existing point of view and refine it.
Finally, the academic freedom is important in terms of economic and cultural prosperity of any democracy because true innovation can only happen in the free environment. Academic freedom allows the scientist to fail and develop his theory further. The countries, where intellectual curiosity is stimulated, have a huge potential both economically and culturally.In conclusion, academic freedom can be considered a definite indicator of health of democratic society because any government and interest groups, who try to limit the intellectual research, undermine democracy.
